Scare Away Spooky Appliance Spirits With These Hauntingly Helpful Tips

This is the time of year when all sorts of fears haunt our dreams — and sometimes our homes. It can be frightening when an appliance misbehaves in a mysterious way, leaving you to ponder puddles of water, ghostly apparitions or things that go bump in the night. And while these events sometimes seem supernatural, they almost certainly aren’t caused by a poltergeist. In some cases, it may be something simple. But for things that are a bit more serious, Aggressive’s ghost-busting fix-it squad can dial your appliances back down from paranormal to just plain normal in no time. Here are some common causes of home appliance horrors.

The Un-Dead Pool

Waking up to water in front of the fridge is frightful, but there could be an easy fix. If the leak seems to be coming directly from the water dispenser, it could simply be the result of trapped air in the water line. Try running water continuously through the dispenser for about three minutes to clear it. Alternatively, the problem might stem from a leaky water supply line. If that’s the case, a simple hose replacement might prevent your kitchen floor from becoming a Swamp Thing.

Ghostly Glassware

There’s nothing more frustrating than opening the dishwasher and finding a ghostly white film on your favorite stemware right before company shows up. The most common causes aren’t sinister specters, but hard water, mineral build-up and your dishwashing detergent. First up, if you’re not using a rinse aid, consider getting some. Rinse aids help water roll off the dishes to keep spots from forming. You also may be using too much detergent, or your detergent may not have effective surfactants to prevent spots. Hard water may also be a contributor. If you don’t have a whole-house water softener, the rinse aid may be enough to prevent spots. Some newer models have salt reservoirs that soften the water the machine uses. Running a couple of cups of vinegar through your dishwasher regularly can remove mineral deposits that may have built up in the machine. Just be sure to check your manual first to see what the manufacturer recommends for your particular model.

The Zombie Spin Cycle

Front-loading washers spin at a higher speed than top loaders and may transmit vibrations to the floor as a result. If your machine is sitting on a floor with concrete underneath (like a slab), you probably won’t hear anything. But if the floor is elevated on wooden joists, well, that’s just a big old drum and the machine may be banging away on it. Most models will have “feet” — the small pads between the machine and the floor — and these should be adjustable. Use a level and see if the machine is tilted. Adjusting the legs to level the machine could help minimize things going bump in the night.

Phantom of the Oven

Ovens are supposed to cook evenly from top to bottom and side to side, but that’s not always the case — and it can lead to casseroles with scattered spots of overly crisp crust. First, visually check to see if the heating elements are glowing red uniformly. Next, lay out a baking pan with enough pieces of bread to cover side to side and front to back. Then toast and watch through the glass door to see if any areas are cooking unevenly. If you have cooler spots, try changing the position of the racks or rotating the pan while cooking. Also check your bakeware. Baking pans should be reflective; if the Ghost of Thanksgivings Past has left a layer of burnt-on brown, try cleaning the pan thoroughly or replacing it.
